For Valentines Day, consider getting that special someone in your life a hand made knife, forged by hand in Canada from reclaimed steel.
For today’s post, I want to show off one of my favorite projects that would make for a very unique gift – a small paring knife I hand hand forged from high carbon automotive spring steel. Both of these knives are entirely, 100%, forged by hand in Ontario.
Forged from automotive steel
I wish I could tell you what model and make of car (or truck) it’s from, but I found the leaf spring on the side of the road and I have no idea what kind of vehicle it fell off of.
But I do have a stack of leaf spring that was harvested from an old Ford F150 pickup truck. Truck and automotive leaf springs are made from 5160 high carbon steel, and make excellent steel for forging into knives or any tool that needs to be tempered to hold a good hard edge.
Hand forged in Canada
So when I saw the chunk of leaf spring sitting on the side of the road, I stopped to pick it up, knowing that it would be good knife making material. I took that chunk home and used a piece of it to forge into this little paring knife.
I etched a patterned patina into the blade using mustard. The handle material is hardwood, with solid brass pins. Like the steel, I’m not sure what hardwood it is. I got a chunk of it for free from a carpenter friend who was cleaning out his garage. However, I loved the reddish hue to the wood and decided to use it.
So for this Valentines Day, consider getting a handcrafted knife forged in Canada for that special foodie in your life. Nothing says “I love you” quite like a handmade knife!
